Raytracing source code

Free VB source do to compute the sphere as shown below… this is an exact computation with a perfect mathematical sphere, no facets!

RayTracedSphere.exe (30 kB only! Requires VB RunTime)

RayTracedSphere.frm (The free source code)

RayTracedSphere.vbp (The free source code)

RayTracedSphere.vbw (The free source code)

Synthetic Images

I have made the following using Real3D2.0 software on a Amiga powered by a 68030/50Mhz 13Mbytes RAM. It took 3 days to render.

The Marlboro box texture has been made pixel by pixel prior to mapping. Major defaults are the cup whose material does not appear realistic (Specularity and brightness specularity probably still too high). Anyway, this cup is rather complex since there are in fact 2: A rather transparent one that covers a much less transparent.

Its "altitude" appears also curious in the scene as if it where floating above the table. I have not been able to make a realistic smoke using this software version. Finally the spoon which was intended to be in silver does not appears like this material.

Notice also the little bit "naive" texture" obtained by mirror inversion of walls.

Ok, this old traditionnal stuff using ray-tracing is of low quality compared to the results you get with radiosity computation. As example, I computed two frames with and without radiosity using the Blue Moon Rendering Tools (that is free).

At the left is the image computed with usual ray-tracing. At the right, the same scene with radiosity... see the difference ?

(Sample scene provided with the BMRT tool).
